The Red River Settlement :: Free Essay Writer
The Red River Settlement The Red River Settlement was founded by the Fifth Earl of Selkirk, Thomas Douglas, In the year 1812. He called his settlement Aissinidoia. Aissinidoia was a close knit community whose economy was built around the Hudson Bay Company. The settlement was split into two major groupings: The French speaking and predominate Roman Catholic Metis and the English speaking and predominate Protestant ââ¬Å"country bornâ⬠. The Earl of Selkirk, Thomas Douglas, bought the Hudson Bay Company in 1811 and was able to get a grant of land for 300 000km2. The Earl called this settlement Aissinidoia. The Earl hoped his settlement would attract some former Hudson Bay Company employees. He hoped the settlement would produce enough food for his company. The Metis were half-breed French/Natives. They were extremely helpful to the settlers when the first moved to the red river area. Some historians believe that if it was not for the Metis that the settlement would not have survived. Eventually the Metis allied with the North West Company who were highly opposed to the Hudson Bay Company moving in. The Norââ¬â¢westers were worried that they could lose their fur supply and pemmican. In 1815 the Norââ¬â¢westers tempted people to move to Upper Canada with offers of better land. The Earl of Selkirk quickly resettled the colony. Some tension between the norââ¬â¢westers, with their allies the Metis, and the settlers led to violence. North West Company men and half-breeds now resorted to violence on a large scale, killing 22 in the massacre of Seven Oaks (June 19, 1816). Upon hearing of the violence the earl went to the fighting with a group of Swiss soldiers. Not only did they win the battle but also captured the Norââ¬â¢westers trading post of Fort William. Other attacks followed. The result of these moves was a series of court charges and counter charges that ruined Selkirk. When Lord Selkirk's legal battles were finally settled, he returned to England. He died in France in the year 1820, just a few months before the two bickering companies resolved their differences and merged. Once Selkirk heard what happened he made his way to where the fight was happening with some Swiss soldiers. Selkirk re-established his colony and also took controlled fort William. The last fight proved to be the last straw for the fur trade companies in the area. The Red River Cart was an excellent transportation method invented by the Metis.

Jane Eyre Essay
The novel Jane Eyre was originally published in London, England in 1847 by Smith, Elder & Co. The early editions of the novel were given the subtitle An Autobiography and named ââ¬Å"Currer Bellâ⬠as the editor, not the author. The subtitle was dropped in subsequent editions of the novel. During the days when the novel was published, it was popularly believed that men and women had different duties and responsibilities. Women were encouraged to be devoted and submissive to their husbands. The ideal woman was passive, charming, self-sacrificing and pure. Jane Eyre and other works of the Charlotte and her sisters were centred around the lives of protagonists who did not conform to these societal ideals. Thus, in order to hide their true identities and genders, the three Bronte sisters published their works under pseudonyms. These were Acton Bell (Anne Bronte), Ellis Bell (Emily Bronte) and Currer Bell (Charlotte Bronte). Despite its immediate popularity, Jane Eyre was condemned by its earliest critics as anti-Christian. These negative reviews can be attributed to the generally rebellious tone of the novel. Through the description of the protagonistââ¬â¢s life, including those related to her social status and matters of the heart, the reader is presented with several social and political issues. The novel questions societyââ¬â¢s view of women, the importance of the arts and the basis of a solid marriage. Based on the standards of the society in the days when the novel was first published, Jane Eyre as a character lead an immoral life. Jane fell in love and lusted after a married man, was proposed to by her cousin, and describes a clergymen as hypocritical and greedy. The novel is written in such a manner that the reader empathizes with Jane, and in doing so, leads the reader to question his or her beliefs. The novel is also explicitly anti-Christian in that Jane questions the existence and importance of God. During her days at Lowood, Janeââ¬â¢s close friend, Helen Burns contracts tuberculosis. On her deathbed, Helen calmly reassures Jane that by dying young, she is escaping great sufferings, and will go to God. Jane remains sceptical, and asks, ââ¬Å"Where is God? What is God? â⬠In the same conversation, Jane questions the existence of heaven and the ability of people to enter it. Using contemporary standards, these questions might be considered by some to be normal and even healthy. However, in the context of the society during the time when the novel was first published, such comments would have been considered as blasphemous and grossly immoral. Critics who believed that the novel was in fact an autobiography were correct. Although the life of the character Jane Eyre is not identical to that of the author Charlotte Bronte, there are obvious parallels. For example, while attending Lowood School, one of Janeââ¬â¢s closest friends dies of consumption. Similarly, while attending school at Cowan Bridge, Janeââ¬â¢s sisters died of the same illness. This coincidence drew comparisons between the fictional headmaster of Lowood whom Jane denounces as insincere and deceitful, and Charlotteââ¬â¢s own former headmaster who ran Cowan Bridge. Another parallel can be drawn between the character of John Reed and Charlotteââ¬â¢s brother Branwell, because both men suffered from alcoholism. Perhaps the most obvious similarity between the novel and the authorââ¬â¢s life is the fact that both Jane and Charlotte were governesses. In accepting Jane Eyre as the true adventures of its heroine and by branding the novel as anti-Christian, early critics were correct. Due to similarities in the personal life of Charlotte Bronte and the experiences of Jane Eyre, it can be inferred that the novel is an autobiography. Based on the standards of society during the time it was first published, the rebellious tone and the manner in which the novel questioned respected social institutions, the novel can be considered as anti-Christian.

One lesson in a Thousand It all started last year when I was on the plain city pioneers travel baseball team. We went to a baseball tournament and it is called Game Day USA and they gave out an MVP award to a player and the end of each game that performed the best, they gave the award to a player on each team. Later that night I found out that the piece of plastic I received was my ticket to a Game day USA tournament in a bunch of different states. But I could only choose one. Lesley Jacobsââ¬â¢ work ââ¬Å"Pursuing Equal Opportunitiesâ⬠first sets out to provide a theoretical model from which to provide normative foundations for proposing social policies that regulate competition for scarce resources, as well as for the purposes of critiquing them. Jacobs advocates for equal opportunities as a regulative ideal, and the model he uses to justify this is three-dimensional and radical in this way as it includes the addition of ââ¬Å"stake-fairnessâ⬠to ââ¬Å"procedural fairnessâ⬠and ââ¬Å"background fairness,â⬠which previous models have not fully articulated. The addition of stakes fairness allows for Jacobs to set the foundation for his equal opportunities ideal in opposition to John Rawls who objected to equal opportunities on the basis of natural inequalities. One of the most shocking parts of this book is Jacobsââ¬â¢ claim that natural inequalities are a myth, therefore an argument for equal opportunities in place of the Rawlsian ideas including the difference principle (Inequalities are ok as long as those disadvantaged by them benefit more than if they did not exist) can be revitalized. Personally, I was on the edge of my seat reading this because being persuaded by such a statement would be tantamount to a sort of freedom I could not possibly imagine on my own. ââ¬Å"What We Talk About When We Talk About Loveâ⬠by Raymond Carver is a story about four friends having drinks and conversing about what love means to them. Terri tells a story of her former partner, Ed, who used to physically abuse her and claims that he did so out of love. Mel, who is a cardiologist, tells a story of this who couple who was in a terrible car accident, and while healing the old man was saddened because he could not turn over and look at his wife due to the casts restricting his movements. Mel also goes on to say that no one truly knows what love is. Carver uses alcohol, conversation, and the Sun to convey the idea that no one truly understands the elusiveness of love. This is very important to the context of the story because it begins the narrative. She goes on to explain her experiences with Ed. Specifically, the time he beat and dragged her through their home. After having read part I of Michael Pollenââ¬â¢s book these chapters give us a view of the beginning of the step by step process of food from the farmlands to the dinner table. Pollen takes us on a Journey through the fields in Iowa and concludes with a trip to analyze meal he shared with his family at a local McDonaldââ¬â¢s. The fiestas of these animals is cut short because they are now being feed a food that naturally is not a part of their nature (grass). To prevent them from getting sick, the cows are being given antibiotics that are eventually passed onto the meat that is consumed by the buyer. The increased demand for the meats of these animals has led farmers to mass breed cows at an alarming rate, placing consumers at risk for the threat of disease ( E. Coli 01 57:HE). Pollenââ¬â¢s description of fast food was definitely a shocker. He talks about all the synthetic food additives that put into fast food the give hem their color, texture and taste. It is scary to imagine that so many chemicals (Ex. TPTB) can be used to make something that so many people find tasty. When a McDonald meal is broken down, it seems almost unheard of that anyone would eat this separate on its own. Pollen voices his concern on how so much energy is wasted on creating these meals, the tens of thousands of corn calories being consumed that could have been used for other food purposes to feed so many hungry people. The first part of this book was definitely an eye-opener. Pollenââ¬â¢s book allows us to take a second look at the way a lot of people get their food. We are given a better idea on how food is grown in its natural state, the industrial process by which food is treated with chemicals, how these chemicals may become a part of the product itself to stimulate growth, and how this chemicals may eventually find their way to our dinner plates. The introduction of the new Rudd Administration has help in the changing of the industrial relations in Australia.
